Hopefully most of you will have now heard the good news, that an interim agreement has been agreed between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU). The agreement means that postal workers will work as normal during the Christmas period - something that I am sure will be welcomed across the whole of the country. The agreement also sets out a framework for the rest of the discussions on modernising the Royal Mail, which still need to take place. I am pleased that an independent person will be selected, with the help of ACAS and the TUC, to oversee the remaining discussions. It is clear that all parties are working towards a long-term solution, and recognise the need to avoid further industrial action. I have been contacted by a number of people - including many local residents and small businesses - who were concerned about the impact of industrial action by the CWU. I made representations on behalf of the residents & businesses of Tooting to both Royal Mail management and the CWU, and hopefully this has helped both sides realise the impact that the dispute had on all of us. If you have any further concerns about the postal service - either nationally or locally - please do not hesitate to let me know. I shall keep you updated on any further developments. |
