Sadiq Khan MP
Tooting residents hit with 25% increase in parking permits

Sadiq has slammed the inflation busting 25% price increase for Residents Parking Permits by Wandsworth Council.

This comes at a time of recession, when inflation is at an all time low.

Residents will have to pay £20 a year more just to park outside their own house, while businesses will have to pay £115 more per vehicle at a time when they need as much help as they can get from the Council.

And it gets worse.  A permit only entitles residents to a 20% discount on parking throughout the borough.

In contrast Kensington and Chelsea residents pay £15 more for their Permits but can park in any road in their Borough.

Council’s throughout London are also considering following Kensington and Chelsea’s lead,  offering free parking at weekends in a bid to boost business on the high street.

Not in Wandsworth.  Businesses already hit by the recession now have to find the extra cash to pay for the price bump.

There have been no changes to parking charges for visitors and only a small increase in costs for skip and scaffold licences, meaning Wandsworth’s residents and businesses are bearing the brunt of the cost of parking in their own borough.

Sadiq Khan MP said, “Car owners are just a cash cow for Wandsworth Council.”

“In these difficult times the Council should be looking for ways to help local families and businesses, not punish them.”

“Inflation is low, and the Council has huge reserves in its accounts, so there can be no justification for an increase of over 1200% the rate of inflation.”

“This is another case where Wandsworth residents and business owners are promised low taxes only to be stung with hidden costs.”

“Local residents deserves better.”
