Sadiq Khan MP has welcomed plans to introduce a new police hub dedicated to policing Tooting Town Centre. The new team, which Labour Councillors and Sadiq have lobbied Wandsworth Council to introduce, will provide high visibility policing in Tooting Town Centre for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will consist of a Police Sergeant, 2 Police Constables and 4 PCSOS. The new team will complement the existing Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) Sadiq was instrumental in getting rolled out throughout Tooting. Sadiq Khan MP said, “This is great news for Tooting Town Centre.” “I have campaigned for this team since my election, as it is the most logical way of policing the town centre.” “Not only will this mean better policing for the town centre, it will also free up the Safer Neighbourhood Teams in Tooting and Graveney to focus their resources on resident’s concerns outside of the town centre .” Mr Khan actively campaigned for the roll-out of full SNTs across his constituency, leading to the early introduction of Safer Neighbourhood Teams throughout Tooting. This had a significant impact on crime and anti-social behaviour. In August last year Sadiq won a further victory in his campaign for more investment in community policing, and getting even more ‘bobbies back on the beat’, when the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, visited the Community Policing Contact Centre in Tooting to announce new investment in Special Constables. The Special Constabulary was boosted by 6,000 new constables will receive an addition £2.25 million funding package to be spent on the recruitment and training of ‘Specials’. |
