Yesterday the government announced a radical new national strategy to help transition the UK into a low carbon economy. The Low Carbon Transition Plan - a comprehensive plan that sets out how the UK will become a low carbon country - is the first in the world.

The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, the Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP set out carbon budgets for all government departments alongside new plans for reducing carbon emissions.

The Low Carbon Transition Plan includes measures to take back powers from Ofgem to help speed up the connection of renewable energy projects, to help people to pay for energy savings measures like insulation and to help farmers reduce emissions through changing fertilisers and supporting anaerobic digestion projects.

As a Minister in the Department for Transport Sadiq Khan MP will have a pivotal role working alongside Ed Miliband and other Ministers to implement a range of measures including:

  • Cutting average carbon dioxide emissions from new cars across the EU to 95g/km by 2020
  • Pressing the EU to require new vans to be more efficient
  • Investing up to £30 million over the next two years to deliver several hundred low carbon buses
  • Launching a competition for the country’s first Sustainable Travel City
  • A new £5 million investment in improving cycle storage at rail stations

Climate change is one of the biggest issues facing the government today and these plans are vitally important in helping the country to transition quickly into a low carbon, green society, creating new jobs and a healthier environment.
