Tooting MP Sadiq Khan has been awarded the prestigious Jenny Jeger Award for ‘The Best Fabian Society publication of 2009’.

The booklet, entitled ‘Fairness not Favours – How to reconnect with British Muslims’, explored how to provide better opportunities for British Muslims in order to improve integration and tackle extremism.

‘Fairness not Favours’ argues that an effective agenda to provide opportunity and tackle extremism across all communities must go beyond a narrow approach to security, and sets out new proposals for a progressive agenda on inequality and life chances, public engagement in foreign policy, an inclusive Britishness and rethinking the role of faith in public life.

Sadiq Khan MP said ‘It’s a great privilege to be recognised in this way. The issues that I write about are clearly dear to my heart. Promoting political participation is now more crucial than ever.’

Sunder Katwala, General Secretary of the Fabian Society, said ‘We thought Sadiq’s pamphlet was important to publish, as it took the ongoing public debate about Britishness, National Identity and Citizenship and showed how this could be turned into substantive proposals for government. Sadiq’s proposals identify policies that would help bring communities together, rather than divide them.”

The judging panel described Sadiq’s publication as “a pamphlet in the great Fabian tradition, putting a very impressive argument on a sensitive subject.”

The prize was established in 2000 in commemoration of Jenny Jeger, a lifelong Fabian member, who was Chair of the Fabian Society in 1984.
