Tooting is one of the most culturally diverse communities in London and undoubtedly why it is such a vibrant and exciting place to live. Sadiq's job is to represent the interests of his constituents and their various cultural backgrounds. Consequently Sadiq is committed to fighting for fairness and equality internationally as well as domestically. Sri Lanka - Sadiq continues to have strong relations with members of the Tooting Tamil community. He met with them as well as local residents to discuss the escalation of violence in Sri Lanka which occured last year. Sadiq wrote to the Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, representing the views of the numerous constituents who have contacted him on the matter. In addition, Sadiq has lobbied the Government to increase its aid budget to Sri Lanka. To read more about Sadiq's involvement please click here. The Middle East Crisis - Finding a resolution to the Middle East Crisis is something that has eluded the worlds' political leaders for decades. Sadiq's own work in this area has involved discussing the conflict with members of his local community such as the Young Muslim Advisory Group. Afghanistan - Sadiq was recently part of a Foreign and Commonwealth Office organised visit of prominent British Muslims to Afghanistan. The group visited aid projects, hospitals and farms and met British troops and local politicians. Pakistan - Sadiq is extremely proud to be part of Tooting's Anglo-Pakistani community. He has visited Pakistan on numerous occasions including soon after a devastating earthquake which occured there in 2005. Below is a video of Sadiq's thoughts upon meeting with Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani, They discussed a range of issues from how the UK and Pakistan can work together to prevent violent extremism right through to trade and education.
Sierra Leone - Sadiq became one of the first MPs to volunteer as part of Project PolVol, a VSO programme enabling MPs to volunteer during the summer recess. He used his background in human rights and his political expertise to support the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights in Sierra Leone to develop their policy and lobbying expertise.
