Labour is Supporting Families

Tags: Children | Labour

Finding the right balance between working hard to support your children, while not missing out on them growing up, is a challenge for every parent.

That's why the Labour government has provided extra help for parents, including:

  • Extending Statutory Maternity Leave to nine months, and increasing Statutory Maternity Pay from £60 a week to £123 - the largest increase since 1948.
  • Introducing paid Statutory Paternity Leave, so dads can have time off when their baby arrives
  • Providing Wandsworth Council with almost £400,000 to fund free childcare for two-year olds from the poorest families
  • Giving the parents of under 17s the right to request flexible working hours – ten million parents are eligible to request this
  • Increasing child benefit to £20 per week for the first child and introducing child tax credit, so that work pays for parents
  • Changing the law so everyone gets at least 4 weeks off work each year, plus paid bank holidays
  • Ensuring nobody can be forced to work over 48 hours a week.

Sadiq Khan MP said, "Taken together, these measures have made a real difference to parents and families.  The question now is how we build on them to further strengthen family life."
