Impact of the Northern Line Timetable on Services

What is the Northern Line Timetable?

The Northern Line is one of the busiest tube lines on the London Underground with 840,000 people using the service on weekdays. The timetable was a strategy that sought to simplify the Northern line and make the service more efficient. It had two key objectives:

• Allow quicker recovery from late running and delayed trains
• Respond to the increasing passenger demand by boosting the services to the Bank branch in the peak.

By operating a simpler service pattern in both the weekday off-peak and at weekends customers now have a much more reliable service both at these times and also in the weekday peak because it is so much easier for us to recover from any late running and delay.

Improvement in congestion

Congestion has been reduced on some of the most overcrowded parts of the line. This has been achieved by increasing capacity on the Bank branch by 10% in the morning rush hour, reducing overcrowding between London Bridge and Bank.

Overall, platform wait time between Clapham and Stockwell has decreased by 5% - in spite of increased demand.
