Pretty hectic day today. Dropped the girls off at the Brownies before heading off to the opening of the newly refurbished Balham Nursery and Children's Centre. It's a tangible example of government investment and the fulfilment of another one of my election promises to Tooting residents.
After the opening I joined local residents and councillors in Balham for a few hours, chatting to residents on the doorstep about the issues that matter to them. Generally positive response, especially on local issues.
This done, I was off on patrol with the head of the Tooting Town Centre's brand new Safer Neighbourhood Team - Sergeant Ian Martin. I've been campaigning to get 'bobbies on the beat' back since I was first elected in 2005, and all wards got them ahead of schedule two years ago - mission accomplished. This is a new team which will focus on the town centre, addressing the unique challenges it creates and leaving the ward teams to focus on residential issues.
I left Sergeant Martin and his team to pursue suspicious acting group who had been hanging around the town centre, following a tip-off from two shoppers - great to see they're already making an impact and helping local residents. |
