Today I completed my usual Christmas visits to all of our fantastic local primary schools. This is a great time to be visiting our schools; joining in with Christmas carols and the special assemblies that are being held.
In no particular order, my favourite three Christmas visits were Earlsfield Primary School, Sellincourt Primary School and Fircroft Primary School.
At Fircroft I joined the staff and children singing "When a child is born"; you know you’re old when none of the children know who Johnny Mathis is!
At Sellincourt Ms Barrett (the Headteacher) and I were both in tears as Miss Marshall and the children sang “Moonriver” for Mrs Black and Mrs Wright who were leaving the school after almost 60 years service between them. The presents and testimonials given to Mrs Wright and Mrs Black were extremely emotional.
I have seen a lot of the children and the staff of Earlsfield Primary School over the last few months and they continue to impress me. We all joined in with ‘Away in a Manger”, and celebrated the achievements of Jake in being a runner-up in my Christmas Card competition.
For me Christmas is always a time I reflect on the last year and think about the great things that have happened in Tooting. Once again I have been astounded by the strength of our community and the Herculean efforts put in by so many to improve the lives of their friends and neighbours.
The hard work and community spirit shown by groups and organisations such as the Furzedown Project, Student Action for Refugees, Transition Town Tooting, Tidy Up Tooting and our numerous welfare associations, disability support groups, churches and mosques prove that the people of Tooting don’t need the excuse of Christmas, or any other holiday, to act in a charitable and caring manner towards their neighbours.
I am proud to represent these people and support their work, and will continue to do so in the New Year.
Whoever you are, however you are spending your holidays and whatever beliefs you hold, I hope your Christmas is filled with joy. I thoroughly look forward to representing all of you next year.
Merry Christmas!
