Obama and voting
Friday, 23 January 2009 18:01

President Obama marks a fresh start for America and signals the start of a fresh impetus to deal withmany global issues that have stalled over the past eight years, like climate change and peace in the Middle East.obama.jpg

President Obama has already achieved a great deal; inspiring thousands of Americans to vote for the first time and has revived America's faith in democracy – no small task after the fiasco of the Presidential elections in 2000. His commitment to close Guantanamo Bay, end the disgrace of torture and make peace in the Middle East his international priority are extremely welcome.

He has inspired me to try even harder to improve democracy here in Tooting. Though voter re gistration levels are already higher in the UK than in America, London is lagging behind the rest of the country and there is definitely some room for improvement.

Research conducted by the Electoral Commission shows that London has the highest percentage of people that are not registered to vote, and for Inner London areas such as Tooting the percentage was over twice the average for the rest of England.

We don't yet know when the next General Election is going to be - I have no inside information on this myself (though I wish I did!) But when the time comes I hope that together we can get as many people as possible voting here in Tooting.

That's why I'm launching a Voter Registration Campaign. I want every resident to be able to have their say in who forms our next government (and whether or not I get to keep my job!)
