If you haven't heard the news already, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown has just gone to Buckingham Palace and asked the Queen to dissolve parliament, which means there will be a General Election on May 6th. There will be a short 'washing up' period to complete remaining legislation between now and parliament being officially 'dissolved', after which I will no longer be your MP. Instead I will be a candidate standing for (re)election as the Member of Parliament for Tooting. Firstly I wanted to thank you. I was born at St George's Hospital and grew up here (and I'm raising my daughters here too) - and it has been an honour to have been able to serve as your Member of Parliament for the last 5 years. Tooting is a unique place, with a fantastic community spirit, and this has made the last five years engaging, enjoyable, and (yes) challenging at times! I've received and responded to thousands of your questions, and helped over 10,000 people with important casework issues. There have been highs and lows, and these have been difficult time for many people in the constituency. I have been in a privileged position to help many, and have worked hard within government to ensure that as much possible has been done to soften the impact of the recession locally. Thanks to the government's policies unemployment locally is nearly 40% lower now than it was in 1997. When I was first elected in 2005 I made five pledges: safer streets with more police on patrol, first-class NHS services and more investment in local health services, dignity in retirement, support for families, and finally, to be a local MP campaigning for local residents on local issues. In the last 5 years I've been able to fulfill all of these pledges, and much more (for more information see my most recent newsletters here and here), but there's much more to do. I'll be standing for re-election on May 6th - I'd like to think I've done enough to win your support and return as your MP in the next parliament. Please get in touch over the coming days and weeks if you have any questions, or want to help out with my re-election campaign. I'm here to help, whatever your politics. Best wishes, Sadiq P.S I have moved offices to 220-222 Upper Tooting Road, SW17 7EW - please come down if you want to get involved in the campaign. |
