Senior Met Officers face misconduct panel over Kirk Reid investgation

A report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission has heavily criticised senior police officers operating as part of Wandsworth's Sapphire Unit, who were charged with investigating sex attacks between January 2003 and January 2008.

The IPCC report heavily criticises the investigation of a series of attacks by Kirk Reid, who was eventually convicted of 27 sexual offences and linked to a further 80-100 sexual assaults.

Sadiq Khan MP said, "The IPCC report will be of no comfort to the women who were victims of Kirk Reid.

"It is astonishing that the police allowed this dangerous man to slip through their fingers thereby allowing him to attack more women.

"It is clear from way the police dealt with the Kirk Reid and John Worboys cases that these investigations have not been getting the attention they deserve.

"The Metropolitan Police need to urgently show real leadership at the most senior level to start wining back public confidence.

"At the same time, the Government needs to heed the lessons of these cases and ditch their plans to give anonymity to rape defendants. It is only by naming defendants that other victims of serial rapists come forward."
