Sadiq Khan welcomes sentence review in Ekram Haque killing
Friday, 30 July 2010 16:27
Sadiq Khan MP has welcomed the Attorney General's decision to review the sentencing of Leon Elcock and Hamza Lyzai, the two people convicted of the Manslaughter of Ekram Haque.
Sadiq Khan said: "the original sentence was far too lenient.
"I have been inundated with constituents contacting me to express their disgust at this sentence.
"I am pleased that the Attorney General has taken heed of my representations, and public disquiet.
"However, justice will still not be done until those responsible are re-sentenced for the appropriate length to take account of their outrageous actions.
"I will be following this matter closely to ensure justice is done.
Sadiq wrote to the Attorney General, Rt Hon Dominic Grieve MP, earlier this week to ask for the case to be referred to the Court of Appeal. A decision on whether the case will be referred will be made within 30 days.
