Sadiq congratulated Joan for her achievement and for her involvement in several important campaigns which have changed the lives of many people local residents. Many of the campaigns have revolved around helping those who are blind or partially sighted. Joan was inspired when she lost the sight in her left eye in 1970 and noticed the lack of help given to the elderly who experience this. This encouraged Joan to do something about it, she asked Wandsworth council to help her set up a meeting so that those who were over 55, blind and partially sighted in the community could meet and discuss their experiences. She held the first meeting in her flat until she was given a near derelict building to work in by the council, which she turned into a centre for the blind. Perhaps the most notable of the campaigns Joan had aided is the ‘pot in the fridge’ campaign, which encourages all patients to keep a pot of their medication along with information on their condition in the fridge, so it can be found at ease by a medical team. When Joan required an ambulance in 2009 she discovered that the medics were not aware of this and so set about spending her time raising awareness of the campaign which can help save the lives of vulnerable patients Sadiq Khan MP said, “This award is a small way in which the community can thank Joan for all her hard work and dedication.” “Joan is an inspiration to us all and I know she has plenty more ideas and energy." |
