Sadiq raises case of Balham entrepreneur detained in Dubai with Foreign Office
Thursday, 10 March 2011 20:20

Sadiq Khan MP has met with the Middle East Minister Alistair Burt MP at the Foreign Office earlier this week to push for further assistance from the UK Government in trying to secure the release of local resident Safi Qurashi from prison in Dubai.

Mr Qurashi was sentenced to seven years in jail last year for issuing cheques that bounced during a business deal.

Having been approached by the family last year for help, Mr Khan has been actively trying to get information and help from both the UK Government and also from the UAE Embassy here in London.

The aim of the meeting on Tuesday morning with Mr Burt was to reinforce face to face a number of concerns surrounding the case against Mr Qurashi and his business partner, Mustafa Nagri.

Also present at the meeting was Mr Nagri’s Member of Parliament, Barry Gardiner. (MP for Brent North)

Sadiq Khan MP said, “Our meeting with the minister was very productive indeed and both Barry and I were able to explain in detail our concerns regarding the unfairness of the trial which we consider to be in breach of international standards.

“We have asked the government to ask the UAE to review the case in depth and Mr Burt is seriously considering this option.

“I am pleased that the Foreign Office made the time to meet with us to discuss this case and I hope that with their assistance we are able to get some answers for Safi and Mustafa and their respective families.”
