Tackling rogue landlords
Tuesday, 05 July 2011 00:00

I wrote to The Department for Communities and Local Government about landlords in April and you can see here the response I received. I also tabled some Parliamentary Questions in the House of Commons, to ensure that this issue was on record and that the Government continue to crack down on rogue landlords.

We must ensure that private landlords and their practises are being monitored as more people rent in the private sector. This is why I support the National Accreditation Scheme. The scheme provides mutually beneficial regulations, advice and a forum for both landlords and tenants to ensure they are being treated fairly. It is important to raise awareness of the scheme and I support Shelter’s steps towards doing so. I have met with representatives from Shelter on several occasions, including with Cambell Robb, the recently appointed Chief Executive of the organisation to discuss various issues surrounding homelessness.

I will continue to maintain a good working relationship with the organisation and to support their vital work and to hold the Government to account for the decisions they make over the coming months.
