Update on events in Tooting
Tuesday, 09 August 2011 15:41
I just wanted quickly update residents on events in Tooting (and the surrounding area) today and over the past few days.  Sadly some shops were attacked on Sunday night (you can read about it (here), and there were major problems in Clapham Junction and Croydon last night, which have been covered widely in the national media.

I’ve received several briefings from the police, but obviously this is a very fluid situation, so some of this information may be out of date by the time you read it.  I am on my way now to a meeting with senior police officers locally to discuss various measures they are taking in light of the current situation.

The last update I received indicated no incidents in the local area today.  Local businesses are closing early as a precaution, but there is no intelligence of any disturbances in the area.

Police are conducting reassurance patrols, but have not reported any incidents in the area this afternoon.

I would ask all residents to stay safe and look after each other.  It is also really important that we ask where are sons and daughters, nephews and nieces and younger siblings are today – I would advise residents to stay indoors this evening.  A lot of people are scared – if you have any particularly vulnerable neighbours and friends locally please check in on them.

I’ve written at length about the events of the past few days at the Evening Standard here – I won’t repeat my words at length – but suffice to say as a city now is the time to pull together and stop this violence.

I’ll continue to post updates on my website/twitter feed and facebook page.
