On Monday I met with officers at Wandsworth Council to discuss proposals to open a new primary school on Franciscan Road, which would be run by Graveney School. The new school would provide an additional 60 primary school places for 5 year olds from 2013, which is in line with the likely increase in local demand, and would operate the same admissions system as the other local state (non-faith) primary schools.
Though it would be run by Graveney School, this would have no impact on admissions to the senior school e.g. It will not act as a feeder school (I realise this is a concern a number of local residents have). The intention is that it becomes part of the 'family' of state primary schools we have locally.
The school would be located in what is currently the Franciscan Road Professional Centre – an old Victorian school building – and would share a site with the Francis Barber Pupil Referral Unit. All the business services that are currently on the site would relocate to the new business centre at Burntwood School (due to be finished in the summer) and other local office space.
For many reasons I think this is a positive step for the local area. It’s clear to me that more primary school places are needed locally, and I am confident that a jointly presented bid by the local authority and an existing local school with an excellent track-record will meet the needs of local children, and ensure this is a well-run and inclusive school.
In order for the government to approve the school we need to demonstrate support for the school from local parents, particularly those who have children who will be 5 years old in September 2013. Graveney are currently running a consultation which you can respond to online here: http://www.graveney.org/dvportal.aspx?targetportal=64
Responses need to be sent in as soon as possible – as the application must be sent to the Department for Education by 24th February.
Please do – this is the best chance we have of getting the primary school places we need over the next few years.
