Fire Minister, Sadiq Khan MP, visited Battersea Fire Station this week to praise the excellent work of their team – and announce additional funding to help tackle future emergencies.

Sadiq Khan, who is the Member of Parliament for the neighbouring constituency of Tooting, chose Battersea Fire Station to announce the Government’s commitment to invest an additional £19m into the Fire Service.

The funding will be used to improve the rescue of people from collapsed buildings as well as decontamination of the public. The money - which will cover the cost of protective clothing for Firefighters, as well as training on dealing with hazardous substances – comes on top of the £1bn already committed to purchasing specialist equipment for dealing with major incidents.

Sadiq said; “This is brilliant news for the fire service, and therefore the general public.”

“I wanted to make this announcement to some of the country’s finest Firefighters – and Battersea’s Urban Search and Rescue Team is one of the best.”

“Many Wandsworth residents may take the Battersea Fire Service for granted, but they have experience of helping at major train disasters and building collapses. They are also trained and prepared in case of any future terrorist attack, chemical accident or gas leak. We are fortunate to have them as part of our local fire service, and we should all be proud of the specialist work they do.”
