josephgeraghtycopy.jpgSadiq Khan recently presented Mr Joseph Geraghty with a Veterans Badge and a certificate from the Minister for Veterans, honouring Mr Geraghty’s service in the Armed Forces.

Mr Geraghty, who served from 1945 until 1948 in Egypt, Gibraltar and Palestine and signed up when he was just sixteen and a half years old, was delighted to receive the award.

Sadiq said “Mr Geraghty is a real hero and we must never forget the contribution that he and many others in the Armed Forces have made to our country. This badge is a small symbol of our gratitude.

The Veteran’s Badge recognises the contribution made by men and women who have served in the UK’s Armed Forces. Previously the badge was only awarded to Veterans who served before 1960, but it has now been made available to all who have served in HM Armed Forces.

The badge is an enamelled, engraved, and pinned, lapel badge featuring the words “HM Armed Forces – Veteran”, which encompass the Tri-Service, Anchor, Crossed Swords and Eagle motif. Its symbolism is intended to unite all veterans in recognising the commonality of their service, to encourage a sense of unity and community between surviving veterans and to ignite public recognition of our veterans and their continuing contribution to society.

Sadiq said “I would like everyone who is entitled to a badge in Tooting to apply for theirs. Please contact my office and we will process your application with the Veterans Agency on your behalf.”
