Further delays for Oyster in Tooting
Thursday, 05 February 2009 17:21

oyster_card.jpgSadiq Khan MP for Tooting criticised South West Trains (SWT) for not coming to an agreement with TfL about Oyster Cards.

Local residents who use Earlsfield and Wandsworth Common stations are currently being punished with higher fares and queues by SWT.

Working with Transport for London under the previous Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, Sadiq secured a promise that Oyster would be introduced to overground stations in Tooting by the beginning of 2009 at the latest.

TfL is now beginning to install Oyster Card readers across London, including on the South West Train network at a cost to the taxpayer of £40 million.

Y et the new Mayor of London still has not managed to secure confirmation from South West Trains that it will sign up to the Oyster Pay-as-you-go scheme.

Sadiq Khan MP said “I have campaigned long and hard for extending the Oyster Card scheme to overland stations in the constituency. I am extremely disappointed with this prolonged delay.

“Oyster is used by the overwhelming majority of Londoners – why are Tooting residents being punished with higher fares and queues when overland stations throughout London have already adopted Oyster pay-as-you-go?

“I will continue to put pressure on the Mayor of London, Transport for London and South-Western trains to speed-up the timetable and introduce Oyster as soon as possible at Tooting’s overland stations.

“I have today written to the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to ask him to listen to local residents and ensure that South West Trains sign up for Oyster Cards.
