Sadiq recently joined up with Tooting's very own 'Big Tidy Up' group and Cllr Andy Gibbons to clean up an alley near Bickley Street/Mitcham Road in Graveney Ward. The group was formed by local residents who were annoyed at the way some areas of Tooting seem to go for months without cleaning or rubbish collection. They are tired of being shown little regard by the Council, which seems to think that it’s ok to wade through ankle-deep rubbish, or put up with constant fly-tipping in their streets. They want to show everyone in Tooting that much more can – and should – be done to clean up Tooting.
The group arrived at the site at 12:15 and with so many people helping had finished by 1 o'clock, an hour earlier than anticipated. The group managed to fill 36 rubbish bags and 10 recycling bags as well as unearthing two fridges, a toilet, a TV, 3 car number plates, a couple of tyres and a heap of tiles, wood, plasterboard and other debris. Sadiq was then really pleased that the group went on a walk round the local area picking up rubbish along the way, filling a further 3 rubbish bags and 3 recycling bags with litter.
