Sadiq Khan has launched the fourth annual ‘Tiffin Cup’ competition to find the best South Asian Restaurant in Tooting. Sadiq has contacted South Asian restaurants in the constituency, inviting them to compete in the 2009 competition to find the country’s best South Asian restaurant; he’s confident that one of Tooting’s many excellent restaurants has the culinary creativity and skill to bring the prestigious prize to Tooting. For the last three years, hundreds of local people have contacted Sadiq to nominate their favourite restaurant. This year is expected to be the most competitive to date, with several new restaurants entering for the first time. Al Mirage, Lahore Karahi and Mirch Masala have all won the nomination in previous years. Who will it be this year? To make sure it’s your favourite restaurant, go in, enjoy your meal and fill in a nomination form. The Tiffin Cup is an annual event organised by a cross-party group of Members of Parliament. The Tiffin Club, formed in 2006, celebrates the diversity of South Asian cuisine found in Britain. Each MP can nominate one South Asian restaurant from their constituency. From these, ten will be short-listed and invited to a special cook-off at Bellamy's Restaurant in Parliament where the overall winner will be chosen. The winning restaurant will receive a year's supply of Cobra beer and the 2009 Tiffin Cup. Nominations can be made by picking up a form at your favourite local restaurant and returning it to the restaurant manager. The deadline for nominations is 12pm (noon) on Thursday 27th April. Individual restaurants may have their own deadline for accepting nominations. Sadiq Khan MP said: “The South Asian restaurants in Tooting are the best in the UK. They have really helped put Tooting on the map. It’s great to see that even in difficult economic times, our restaurants are going from strength to strength. “The Tiffin Cup offers a great opportunity to show off our local talent to the rest of the country. “This year’s competition is going to be the biggest and best so far and I’m looking forward to more restaurants than ever getting involved. “The next month will certainly be a great time to eat out in Tooting as restaurants compete for our votes!” |
