Fly tipping and litter have long been major concerns for Tooting residents. Too often, waste from firms and households is allowed to pile up — as well as being unpleasant and illegal, this can also be a health hazard. Labour agrees with local residents that action is needed. We're calling on the Tory-run council to get a grip. Labour campaign team member Sheila Boswell said, "Fly tipping and litter brings our area down. Wandsworth Council has not tackled the problem properly. Their rip-off collection fees are a stealth tax that make the problem worse: people dump rubbish rather than pay them." Compare the Tory charges of £55 for removing DIY waste with many councils that do this for free, and have less of a fly-tipping problem as a result. Labour campaign team member Ben Johnson said, "We all need to work together -- the council, businesses and local residents — to keep our area tidy. How can we attract new firms to Tooting if the council won't help to clean the area up?"
