Shoppers who dropped into Tooting’s Oxfam store recently would have been surprised to see their Member of Parliament, Sadiq Khan, stacking shelves and serving customers alongside the rest of the shop’s local volunteers.
Sadiq spent Friday finding out more about Oxfam and the jobs that its volunteers need to do for the shop to open, before being put to work by the store manager Jan Godden.
Whilst Parliament is in recess Sadiq Khan has been meeting with and working with local charities in order to better understand their work and to help publicise their cause.
In particular Sadiq has been discussing the challenges that local charities face in attracting funding and voluntary support in the current economic climate.
Sadiq is currently in the process of helping a number of charities secure free computer software to help administer their organisations.
Tooting store manager Jan Godden said, “We are a local community shop, well supported by the people of Tooting who shop here and donate so much to us.
“The volunteers were thrilled to meet Sadiq and made sure that he worked hard!”
Sadiq Khan MP said, “The parliamentary recess offers MPs a great opportunity to really get stuck-in in the local community.
“Well-run charity shops like Oxfam really benefit the local community.
“They do a great job raising money for a worthy cause, as well as doing their bit for the environment and generations of students
“They help recycle quality clothes, furniture, electrical equipment, books and other items that would otherwise just end up in landfill.
“Tooting has a great community spirit, with literally thousands of local residents volunteering their time for countless charities and community groups.
“There’s something out there for everyone, so get involved.”
