2009 is a crucial year for the environment. With governments hammering out a new climate change agreement in Copenhagen this December, the next few months could truly determine the future of the planet. Labour understands how important this conference is. The Government is working flat-out with countries around the world to get a binding deal. Other countries listen to us because of our record. Under Labour, the UK is the first country in the world to pass a law requiring us to cut carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. We've given the go-ahead to a new wind farm in Kent (opposed by the Tories), as well as the 'London Array', an offshore wind farm that will generate a quarter of London's electricity. As Transport Minister, Sadiq recognises that big changes are needed. He is helping create plans for high-speed rail across Britain, as well as supporting new electric cars and investing millions to make cycling safer and easier. Sadiq Khan said, "Climate change is the most important issue of our generation. Labour is developing radical policies to tackle the threat it poses to our planet.” “However, we can't leave it all to governments — we must each do our bit.” “That's why I've signed-up for the 10:10 campaign, promising to cut my own emissions by 10% this year. I would encourage all local residents to join in.”
