Primary schools in Tooting celebrated Black History Month this week with several assemblies and workshops investigating black cultural heritage. The events were designed to teach children more about Black History and Heritage by highlighting the positive influence of the black community in British society. On Tuesday 20th October, MP for Tooting Sadiq Khan attended Swaffield Primary School’s Black History Assembly in order to take part in a question and answer session. Swaffield Headteacher Christine Lilley said, “We felt that Sadiq coming would provide a great role model for the children. “Swaffield pupils are from a similar background and loved hearing Sadiq’s answers on his journey into politics. “Black History Month isn’t just about the past, but also about what can be achieved in the future.” On Friday 23rd, Sadiq also attended an event for pupils at Fircroft Primary school arranged by the Lynwood Christian Fellowship, ‘I’m teaching my grown-up about Black History’. The event, which was especially for Year 5 pupils at Fircroft School, featured a talk from Jak Dodd, creator of the Nubian Jak Black history board game, and time with storyteller Anika Wilson, who draws her interactive style from the African Caribbean tradition. Sadiq Khan MP said: “Events like Black History Month are extremely important, as they give young people the chance to hear about ethnic minority role models from today and in the past. “Raising aspirations is one of the biggest challenges we have, and if as a local boy from an ethnic minority background I can help to do this I’m more than willing.”
