Local residents had a chance to quiz Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth MP last week, at a meeting organised by Tooting MP Sadiq Khan.

The Secretary of State spoke for fifteen minutes before taking questions from the floor for an hour and a half.  The topics covered included defence procurement, Trident, support for troops and corruption in Afghanistan, and the discussion was extensive, candid and though provoking.

Sadiq Khan MP said “I feel strongly that local residents should be able to hold politicians to account and that includes the Secretary of State for Defence. Bob Ainsworth explained the strategy in Afghanistan and reasons why 43 countries are there as part of the coalition.”

Local resident Mark Thomas said “It was great to be able to question the Secretary of State for Defence in person. Having read so much about Afghanistan in the papers it was very interesting to hear candid responses from him on the situation on the ground unfiltered by the media. He was honest, forthright and sincere, which I found particularly refreshing. I can’t wait to see who Sadiq is getting down to Tooting next.”
