This morning the Rt Hon John Denham MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local government announced £2.6 million to go towards revitalising empty shops in the run up to Christmas. Sadiq has been meeting local business over the last few weeks to hear from them some of the challenges they are facing. As a result he lobbied the Department for Communities and Local Government, where he was previously a minister, for funds for Tooting. Wandsworth is one of the fifty councils to benefit and will receive £52,632. This extra funding is in addition to the £3 million announced in August. Sadiq Khan MP said “I’m pleased that Wandsworth Council will be given an extra £52,000 by the government to support local businesses through the recession in the run up to Christmas. This is an example of further investment from the Government to help local businesses and communities affected by the recession. “The downturn has damaged the local high street and this money should help the council to revitalise shops that are currently lying empty. “John Denham the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government announced the funding today in neighbouring Lambeth where he praised the Council for the creative ways they are supporting their high streets and local businesses. I hope that Wandsworth Council can learn from their example.”
Indrajit Patel, local businessman and Chair of the Tooting Business Network said “This is certainly very good news. Up and down Tooting businesses are having a difficult time and this extra support will be very welcome.” |
