Caring for people at home
The government has announced plans to fund free personal care at home for over a quarter of a million people with the greatest needs. A further 130,000 people will benefit from help to keep their independence for longer, for example through simple changes to their home. Sadiq Khan MP said, “Two in three women and over half of men will at some time need help with everyday life, like cooking, cleaning or simply getting out of bed. And for one in five of us that help will cost over £50,000.” “With an ageing population, and people rightly expecting high-quality care, this is a really important issue. Most people want to stay in their homes and keep their independence for as long as possible. Ultimately, it should save the NHS money too. I welcome the government's announcement.” Labour is now looking at how to establish a National Care Service, so that people can receive care in their own homes based on their needs, not their ability to pay. |
