On Friday 26th February 2010 Sadiq Khan MP held his fourth annual Warm Front event at St John The Divine Church, Garratt Lane, Earlsfield, London, SW18 4UN. Sadiq Khan working with the scheme managers of the Warm Front Scheme, Eaga, to tackle fuel poverty in Tooting hosted the event to help people get measures that could cut their energy bills by anything up to £600 a year. Sadiq also provided for pensioners a free guide to financial support.
The event has been a great success in previous years and is aimed at providing free and confidential advice to local residents on benefits, energy efficiency grants and wider community help schemes.
To date almost one million pounds has been invested by Warm Front in Tooting with over 800 households assisted. Many of those who have benefited from the Scheme are reporting average households savings of almost £200 a year. Warm Front’s Benefit Entitlement Checks have lead to an income rise of nearly £1,500 per constituent.
Visitors to the event were also able to access advice and services from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team, Community Safety Team, Wandsworth & Merton Law Centre and the Furzedown Project amongst other groups.
Local resident Barbara Clarke enjoyed the event. She said: “It is fantastic that this service is available because it is a multi-purpose event. People can make new friends, have a cup of tea, and meet our local MP! It’s great that we can do all this as well as find out how we can make our homes warmer for less money.”
Martin Carrick from Eaga partnerships was equally enthusiastic about the event: “This was a good opportunity for local residents to learn more about the services and organisations in the area. It has been a really beneficial for all involved – people who wouldn’t normally get in touch with us were able to find out what we do and quite a few residents found out that they were eligible for grants. We are grateful to Sadiq for arranging this event.”
Sadiq Khan MP said: “The recent harsh winter has caused many people to have increased fuel bills and I am determined to make sure that all those people in my constituency who may be entitled to help, are receiving it.”
“The Warm Front scheme aims to help people with energy efficiency and is vital in helping increasing numbers of people who are finding energy bills a heavy burden.”
Warm Front works by providing contributions of up to £2,700 towards insulation and gas heating measures and £4,000 for oil for the elderly, disabled and low income families.
These households benefited from a range of energy efficiency measures including loft and cavity wall insulation, new heating systems and draught proofing. |
