I hope you are enjoying the summer. I managed to get away last week with my wife and girls to Majorca in Spain. We had a great time and it was good to spend some uninterrupted time with my family.
It is good to be back though.
I have been busy at the Department of Transport this week (where we've been working on the introduction of smart cards, like Oyster, for public transport throughout the country - read more here) and catching up on important casework from last week. I've also (with a little bit of help) given the Tooting office a (very) late spring clean.
Ramadhan
The Muslim holy month of Ramadhan begins tomorrow.
Thousands of Tooting Muslims will join hundreds of thousands around the country fasting between dawn and dusk. That means no food or drink.
Yep and that means no water either.
We have many mosques locally; on Tooting High Street, Gatton Road, Church Lane, Tooting Bec Road and Balham High Road.
We really are a diverse and cosmopolitan community!
As Muslims use a lunar calander Ramadhan moves forward each year. For this year and the next few it means fasting during long hot gruelling summer months.
So spare a thought for me as I fast over the next thirty days, and if you have any mates who are Muslims ask them how they are coping....
Ashes
As I finish this email the last Australian wicket has just fallen in the first innings and England have a lead of over. It could be a great weekend. Enjoy it!
