Anti-Social Behaviour
Friday, 08 June 2007 15:51
The last couple of weeks have been as busy and wide ranging as ever.

I attended the launch of the campaign by Gordon Brown to be the Leader of the Labour Party. I nominated Gordon for leader of the party. You can find out more about Gordon's campaign by clicking HERE.

I also attended the launch of the campaign by Alan Johnson to be the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. I am supporting Alan for deputy and think he is the ideal partner for Gordon's leadership team. You can find out more about Alan's campaign by clicking HERE.

I met Jemima Khan, who is a UNICEF Ambassador to discuss the launch of the UN Breastfeeding Manifesto. The Manifesto was produced in 2006 in consultation with over twenty UK organisations working to improve awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding and its role in reducing health inequalities. You can find out more about this by clicking
HERE. You can see a photo of Jemima and me by clicking HERE.

I also met representatives of the Charity Commission to discuss various matters about local charities and how to share best practice. I am excited about recent changes made in Charity law and believe this will help local charities as well as those who want to give to charitable causes. To find out more click
HERE.

The Public Accounts Committee examined Revenues and Customs and the Filing of VAT and Company Tax returns, in particular. A great deal of progress has made in the area of encouraging companies to file their returns in time but there is still a long way to go. You can see the questions I asked by clicking
HERE.

I have also chaired a meeting at Spencer Club, in Earlsfield (off Burntwood Lane) to discuss anti social behaviour problems the club and local residents have been experiencing. The meeting was attended by the Sergeant of Earlsfield Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) and several local residents. As well as discussing the trouble local people are experiencing and bringing them to the attention of the police, we considered different strategies to address the problems. It was decided that the best way to proceed was to set up a panel of local volunteers to be a point of contact in the community, along with the Spencer Club. They will meet with the police every six weeks to keep them fully up to date with the situation. The Police are now aware of the ‘hot-spots’ for disorderly behaviour and will adjust their patrol routes and times accordingly.

If you have witnessed anti-social behaviour or anyone you know is suffering from as a result of it then contact your SNT on 020 8721 2428 or 07920 233932. If you witness a crime being committed call 999 immediately.

I have also attended a Trade Unions reception hosted by Dawn Butler MP for Brent South and a fundraising dinner for Putney Labour Party, where Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP was the key note speaker.

I also held a coffee morning in the Henry Prince Estate in Earlsfield. I spent the early years of my life in the Henry Prince and I always enjoy going back there. I always enjoy older folk telling me they remember me and that I haven't changed a bit (29 years later!). We had a good turn out from local residents and I was pleased representatives from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team and Cllr Rex Osborn were able to join me to discuss issues of concern to local residents. You can see a photo of the morning by clicking

I was able to help the Piggy Bank Kids Charity raise over £100,000, for vulnerable children in the UK, in a 7 aside competition at Stamford Bridge, home to Chelsea Football Club. There were a number of extremely good teams playing. The Parliamentary Team won 2 but lost 3 games. The day wasn't really about winning football matches but about raising money for charity so none of us minded losing too much. You can see a photo of our team by clicking
HERE. Piggy Banks Kids was founded in 2002 by Sarah Brown, Gordon Brown’s wife. To find out more about the charity click HERE.

I have also held my normal advice sessions at Tooting Library and Balham Community Centre over the last week and undertaken my duties as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Leader of the House, Rt Hon Jack Straw MP.

I was very pleased to host Year 6 pupils from St Anselms School in Tooting Bec, who along with their excellent Headteacher, Tom Gatley and other staff members had a tour of the Houses of Parliament and an expert speaker telling them about the procedures of the House. I took part in a Q and A and I was really put through my paces with some excellent questions ranging from why I chose to be a MP, whether I enjoyed it, relations with the Labour Party and Leader to policy questions. I suspect the most enjoyable part of the session may have been the talk by one of the fathers of a pupil, who happens to work in the Table Office of the House of Commons! It is unusual to hear from someone who plays such a crucial part of the running of the Commons and I am confident the children learnt a great deal from their morning. I certainly did!

I also attended and spoke at the launch of the Asian Cancer Support Group at the Cancer Resource Centre. The organisation offers support for people affected by Cancer, be that cancer sufferers or members of their families and healthcare workers who are affected by working with people with cancer.
