Minister in the Government Whips Office
Monday, 16 July 2007 16:42
On Monday I began my new role as a Minister in the Government Whips Office. There is a huge amount to learn and I am quite clearly at the beginning of a steep learning curve. I have been given responsibility for the Justice Department, which is extremely exciting bearing in mind the major changes announced by the new Prime Minister.

On Tuesday I hosted another visit from students of South Thames College. You can see a photograph of these students and me by clicking HERE.

I also attended a reception hosted by Tree House. The Tree House Trust exists to transform the lives of families affected by autism through piloting, evaluating, delivering and disseminating innovative, evidence based ideas and interventions for learning. They help by educating those with autism and those affected by it.

I also had a meeting with Tim O'Toole, Managing Director of the London Underground. I made representation to him about the various improvements that I would like to see on the Northern Line. Major improvements have been programmed into the PPP. I am trying to get improvements in our three local tube stations and the Northern Line sooner rather then later.

I also hosted a major event in the House of Commons on Climate Change. Operation: Climate Control is a new game which simulates the climate of the planet over the next hundred years. On Thursday I, with Richard Stone the Founder-President of Alif-Aleph UK, launched the game by having mixed groups of Muslim and Jewish teenagers compete to effectively manage the Earth's climate. You can obtain further details of Operation: Climate Control by going to their website.

On Wednesday, the new Prime Minister, Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, held his first PMQs. He demonstrated during the course of PMQs why he was such a popular choice amongst Labour MPs, constituencies, and Trade Unions.

On Thursday I was the whip on a committee that approved the Official Secrets Act 1989 (c.6) order 2007.

On Friday I took part in a charity cricket match in honour of the late Nick Clarke, presenter of Radio 4’s, the World at One. The match was MPs and Lords versus Fleet Street. We raised more then £4,500 for "Winston’s Wish", a charity which supports bereaved children (and their families). The choice of charity was made by the Widow Clarke because it has been helpful to her children after Nick’s death.
