Ealing Southall By-Election
Friday, 27 July 2007 17:01
On Monday I attended various Ministerial and Whips meetings in the Department of Justice. For more information on the work of the Ministry of Justice click HERE. I also arranged for students from South Thames College to go on a tour of the Palace of Westminster.

On Tuesday, I took through my first piece of primary legislation – a Bill Committee as a Whip! The Forced Marriages Bill passed its Committee Stage pretty smoothly.

On Wednesday I also helped secure the Crown Employment Nationality Bill through the Committee stage as well as the Revised Funding Code for Public Funding (Legal Aid).

I then met with a senior representative of the Heritage Lottery Fund to discuss how more local organisations can benefit from Lottery Funding. You can find out more details of the Heritage Lottery Fund by clicking
HERE. I shall be working with local groups to ensure Tooting gets a much fairer deal from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Due to a Parliamentary vote I was unable to attend a meeting local residents had organised in Old Hospital Close to discuss anti-social behaviour. I was similarly unable to attend a meeting local residents had organised with the local council and Ernest Bevin College to discuss concerns about trespassing at the new Sports Complex at the College. I arranged for two separate members of my staff to attend these meetings and was very troubled to hear of the concerns raised. I have started work already to try and resolve the problems.

On Thursday I spent the day in Ealing Southall campaigning for the Labour candidate Virendra Sharma in the by-election caused by the sudden death of my good friend Piarra Khabra. It really was a great day made even better by the results. None of the pundits predicted that mid way through a third term the Labour Party could keep this seat and Sedgefield, especially with the decent majorities that we secured. It just goes to show that the electorate really do prefer parties with substance rather than hype and spin.

On Friday I was the main speaker at Oxford University on a Leadership Programme. In the evening I was the Chief Guest at a Public Meeting in Ilford organised by "Forums Against Extremism and Islamophobia". I spoke about the importance of citizenship.

On Saturday I held my normal advice surgery at Tooting Library.

On Sunday, I spent the afternoon in Bedford campaigning with local members of Tooting Labour Party.
