Sadiq met Douglas Alexander, International Development Secretary, to mark World Aids Day on December 1st.

Sadiq urged the International Development Secretary to take action to tackle HIV and AIDS both in the UK and internationally. There are 80 000 people living with HIV in the UK and a further 7,000 new diagnoses every year adding to the 33 million people living with the problem worldwide.

The UK Government has committed £6 billion over 7 years to the fight against AIDS. This significant investment will enable the UK to meet the needs of orphans and vulnerable children affected by AIDS and to increase funding for research and development of AIDS treatments by 50%.

HIV and AIDS affect many people in Wandsworth. Nearly half of all people living with HIV in the UK live in London. About one-third of which are unaware of their infection. This is just one reason that World Aids Day is so important, because raises people’s awareness of the condition, encouraging people to get themselves tested and to ensure that they keep themselves safe.

Sadiq said “Many local residents contact me to urge the Government to take action AIDS both nationally and internationally.

I stressed to Douglas Alexander that the people of Tooting want the UK Government to help people deal with HIV and AIDS.

“Almost half of people living with HIV in the UK live in London. This virus is sadly affecting our own community. I’m extremely pleased to hear that the Government is committed to tackling HIV and AIDS both at home and abroad.

“With 33 million people still living with HIV and AIDS worldwide, we must continue to act. I was very pleased that Douglas committed to continuing the Government’s on tackling poverty at home and abroad.”
