Sadiq has criticised the delayed roll-out of Oyster to overland stations in Tooting.

Local residents will now have to wait until late 2009 before they can use Oyster pay-as-you-go cards at Balham, Earlsfield and Wandsworth Common overground stations.

Sadiq has been campaigning for pre-paid Oyster Cards for overground trains and has had meetings with both Train Operating Companies who run trains in Tooting, South Western Trains and Southern Trains.

Working with the previous Transport for London under the previous Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, Sadiq had secured a promise that Oyster would be introduced to overground stations in Tooting by the beginning of 2009 at the latest.

Sadiq said, “I am extremely disappointed with this delay.

“There was a trial for Oyster pay-and-go at Balham Station last summer – so it is clearly possible – why is there a further delay?”

“I have campaigned long and hard for extending the Oyster Card scheme to overland stations in the constituency.”

“Oyster is used by the overwhelming majority of Londoners – why are Tooting residents being punished with higher fairs and queues when overland stations throughout London have already adopted Oyster pay-as-you-go?”

“I will continue to put pressure on Transport for London, Southern Trains and South-Western trains to speed-up the timetable and introduce Oyster as soon as possible at Tooting’s overland stations.

“I have also today written to the Secretary of State for Transport expressing my anger at the delay and asking him to step in.”
