I've
managed to snatch a few minutes between briefings to sit down
at my new desk in the Department for Transport so I
can write this short message.
It's been
an incredibly strange week.
First of
all I want to thank you for coming out in your thousands to vote in
Tooting to ensure the BNP didn't win any MEPs in the London region on Sunday.
Just over a year ago London elected a BNP candidate to the Greater London Assembly (who has been
a total disaster); this time around Londoners, and Tooting residents, came
out to ensure the mistake wasn't repeated.
It's a
tragedy that the BNP won seats in Yorkshire and Humber and the North-West. We need to find ways to reconnect with voters
throughout the country, and I am going to do everything I can to rebuild a
trusting relationship between the public and their representatives in
parliament and government to ensure this never happens again.
A
surprising phonecall...
I was with
my two daughters at Tooting Leisure Centre on Friday when I received a
phonecall from the Prime Minister asking me to serve as Minister for
Transport. It would mean I would attend Cabinet on Transport matters
and join the Privy Council (becoming the Rt Hon Sadiq Khan MP!). Did I
want the job?
My father
drove the 44 bus from Wandsworth garage for over 25 years - and here I was
being asked to serve as the Transport Minister...
It was
an absolute shock, but when the Prime Minister asks you to do a job for
the country, how can you refuse?
Yesterday
was my first day, and it was incredibly busy as I got used to the
brief - but I can see I'm going to enjoy tackling it.
So another
thank you - to everyone who has supported me down the years - teachers,
lecturers, colleagues, friends and the people of Tooting - you helped me get
here.
My pledge
is to use this position to help serve our community and our country. I am really excited to be in a position where
I can make real improvements to our transport system. Thank you for helping me to be able to do
this.
I have been
absolutely overwhelmed and humbled by the hundreds of messages of
congratulations and best wishes I have received. THANK YOU!
