I am pleased to be here today to announce full approval for Government funding for the proposals to upgrade the Blackpool to Fleetwood Tramway. May I first pay tribute to Blackpool Borough Council and Lancashire County Council for their efforts and commitment to the successful development of this scheme. I know that this scheme has had a long history and I am delighted that it has finally come to fruition. It will allow the purchase of modern trams and new stops that will meet the requirements of disability discrimination legislation. It will also provide for the replacement of much of the current track, priority signals at junctions and the building and equipping of a new depot. I am particularly delighted that this scheme will enable the historic, world-famous Tramway to continue operating. It is synonymous with the town of Blackpool and a special attraction for the many visitors who flock here each year. This Government is committed to improving transport in the regions and this scheme will deliver significant benefits for the local community. I am therefore pleased to announce officially the award of full approval for funding. (This speech represented existing departmental policy but the words may not have been the same as those used by the Minister.) |
